Aim

The aim of this course is to teach candidates how to repair parachute equipment and manufacture component parts according to association requirements and the training given during the course.

Qualifications to attend the Basic Rigger course

• Must be a full association Member
• Must have a reserve parachute packers qualification
• A written recommendation from a CCI or Advanced Rigger who has known the candidate for a minimum of six months.

Duration

• A course is held over a minimum total period of five days.

Course Instructors

• 2 Rigger Examiners per course from different establishments

Basic Rigger Course Syllabus

• Sewing machine useage and maintenance
• Stitch patterns
• Material recognition
• Hardware recognition
• Canopy design and construction
• Container design and construction
• Use of hand tools and grommet sets
• Canopy Repair work (rounds and squares)
• Line replacements (rounds and squares)
• Manufacture component parts
• Container repair work

N.B. Candidates may be required to demonstrate their ability to pack reserves

Limitations of work

• Basic Riggers are cleared for all work done within the Basic Rigger course syllabus listed above. All work has to be inspected and signed for by a supervising Parachute Rigger of at least 2 years standing.
• After successfully completing the Basic Rigger course and prior to the Parachute Rigger course, candidates will work under the supervision of a Parachute Rigger of at least 2 years standing. The supervising rigger will sign and be responsible for all work carried out.

Records

• A course report will be sent to the association Office and Riggers’ Committee and to the candidate’s supervising rigger
• All Basic Riggers must keep a log of all work done, which will be signed for by the supervising Parachute Rigger.

Currency

• Basic Riggers must have their association Membership card endorsed, to be renewed each year with membership
• The renewal form will be signed by an Advanced Rigger who must be satisfied that the applicant is current and progressing with their training.

General information

• Basic Rigger must attend the Parachute Rigger examination course within 12 months of the Basic Rigger’s course
